Wall Panels in Rentals: Damage-Free Installation

06. May 2026 · ArtHouse·1min read

Wall panels in rental apartments - is that possible? Yes, with the right methods. This guide shows you how to install wall panels without leaving any residue, without risking a deposit or leaving drill holes.

What tenants need to know

Lease agreements generally allow for “local changes” — slight drilling, picture hooks, normal wall colors. What is not allowed:

  • Permanent changes without landlord consent
  • Damage to the building structure
  • Damaged wallpaper or plaster when moving out
  • Large adhesive surfaces that drag plaster away when removed

Solution: Methods that are residue-free or can be restored to their original state.

Method 1: Velcro adhesive strips (3M Command)

The best method for lightweight PVC panels. How it works:

  • Double-sided Velcro strips, one side on the wall, the other on the panel
  • Peel off without leaving any residue when removed
  • Hold up to 1.5kg per strip

Procedure:

  1. Clean the wall (cloth dampened with alcohol)
  2. Press the Velcro strips onto the wall (5-8 strips per panel depending on size)
  3. Press the panel onto the Velcro side only
  4. When pulling out: pull off the strip slowly (90° downwards)

Suitable for: PVC panels up to 5 kg, small accent areas.

Not suitable for: heavy wooden panels, large areas.

Method 2: Wooden scaffolding

For wooden and upholstered panels, the most professional method suitable for rental apartments:

  1. Attach wooden slats (3x4 cm) along the wall with minimal screws - 4-6 screws per 2 m slat are enough.
  2. Fill the screw holes when moving out with spatula, paint over them - the landlord doesn't see anything
  3. Screw or glue panels directly onto the slats
  4. When moving out: remove the slats, if necessary a few repair points

Suitable for: all materials, large areas.

Not suitable for: Tenants without DIY experience, very strict landlords.

Method 3: Independent wall modules

Completely self-contained panel modules that are NOT attached to the wall. They stand in a sturdy wooden frame that is clamped between the floor and ceiling (support system similar to room dividers).

  • No wall connection required
  • Can be completely taken with you when moving
  • Optically they look like permanent wall panels

Manufacturer: Special “Floor-to-Ceiling Mounting Systems” — Search for “Tension Pole Wall Panels.”

Method 4: Magnetic attachment

For tenants with steel girder walls (old buildings with drywall, some new buildings):

  • Strong neodymium magnets on the back of the panel
  • Wall magnetic strips (no glue, just magnetic force)
  • Before Kauf: use a hammer knock test to check whether the drywall has steel supports

Suitable for: creative tenants with metal-containing walls. Rarely applicable.

Method 5: Tent technique with bumpers

Several panels are combined to form a "tent wall" with connecting rods that wedge themselves between the floor and ceiling - similar to desk dividers for open-plan offices.

This method is not suitable for every ceiling-floor constellation, but is worthwhile for very strict rental agreements.

What you definitely should NOT do

  • Construction adhesive directly on wallpaper - wallpaper is taken away when removed
  • Very wide screw patterns — many small holes are cheaper to repair than a few large ones
  • Interrupt plastering - no drilling at socket height without a power box plan
  • Double-sided adhesive tape without testing - some wallpapers come off when removed

Before installation: do a test

For each method: a 30 cm² test in an invisible place (behind a cupboard, in a corner). Let stand for 1 week, then remove — rate:

  • Adhesive residue?
  • Damaged wallpaper?
  • Discoloration?

If the test leaves no residue, the method is suitable for installation.

When moving out: repair kit

Be ready for the extract:

  • Acrylic putty (for screw holes)
  • Wall color, identical to original color
  • Finest sanding sponges
  • Microfiber for cleaning adhesive residues
  • Cleaning alcohol for stubborn residues

Plan: Allow 2-3 hours of repair time per panel wall when moving out.

Landlord conversation

If you are unsure, ask. Most landlords are cooperative if:

  • Describe the method (Velcro, wooden frame, etc.)
  • You promise in writing that it will be repaired when you move out
  • You can show pictures of the end result (often improves the quality of living)

If the value of the apartment increases, the landlord may even be happy to agree.

Conclusion

Rental apartments don't exclude wall panels — they just require the right attachment method. Velcro strips for light panels, wooden framework for heavy materials, independent modules for tenants with creative solutions. The effort required for residue-free installation is manageable and the design effect is significant.

At ArtHouse you will find models that are particularly suitable for rental apartment setups - lightweight PVC panels for Velcro fastening, lightweight wooden slats for slatted systems. Detailed assembly instructions for each material in the Installation Guide.
