Home Office Acoustics: Professional Setup Guide

06. May 2026 · ArtHouse·1min read

Bad acoustics in the home office ruin video calls - echo, reverb, background noise, poor speech intelligibility. This setup guide shows you how to achieve professional audio quality without a studio budget.

Why standard rooms are bad for calls

A typical living space has 0.8-1.2 seconds of reverberation time. This acts "empty" for speech and makes audio:

  • Difficult to understand for interlocutors
  • Echo-heavy in recordings
  • Exhausting after longer calls (listening fatigue)
  • Seeming unprofessional

Recording studios have 0.2-0.4 seconds. Realistic target for home office: 0.4-0.6 seconds — significantly improved, but not “dead”.

Step 1: Analyze the room

Clap your hands firmly once with your eyes closed. If you:

  • Hearing clear echoes (like in a cave): critically reverberating, requiring serious treatment
  • Perceive longer reverberation: typical living room, medium treatment
  • Short "pop" without reverberation: already ok, fine-tuning is enough

Step 2: Identify the “Reflection Points”

During calls, sound reflects mainly from:

  1. Wall behind your microphone (comes directly back into the microphone)
  2. Wall opposite the microphone (main echo source)
  3. Ceiling directly above the microphone
  4. Table surface (tapping noises reflect into the microphone)

These four places are the levers for the greatest improvement.

Step 3: Place acoustic panels

Minimum configuration for 12-15 m² home office:

  • 4-6 m² acoustic panels on the wall behind the microphone
  • 2-4 m² on the opposite wall
  • Optional: 1-2 m² above the desk (ceiling)

An NRC rating of 0.7+ is sufficient for each panel set 60x60 cm. Material: padded (velvet, fabric) or wooden slats with felt backing.

Step 4: Desk Setup

  • Table mat: thick felt or desk mat under the keyboard and mouse reduces click reflections
  • Microphone arm: Bring the microphone closer to your mouth than to the table surface
  • Microphone pop filter: reduces plosive sounds (P, T noises)
  • Headset alternative: if required - headset completely eliminates most acoustic problems

Step 5: Minimize background noise

  • Turn the air conditioning and heating down during calls
  • Smartphone into another room (vibrations are picked up by the microphone)
  • Seal the door with door brushes (available free of charge in hardware stores)
  • Activate noise cancellation in software (Krisp, Nvidia Broadcast, Zoom-Built-in)

Step 6: Light setup for video

Lighting is not acoustic, but just as important forprofessional calls:

  • Main light: side, soft light (softbox or ring light)
  • Backlight: dimmable floor lamp
  • Avoid: direct ceiling light (shadows under the eyes)
  • Avoid: bright windows in the back (backlight silhouette)

Step 7: Design the background

A well thought-out background wall increases professionalism:

  • Acoustic panels with a wood look look elegant
  • Bookshelf with selected books
  • A single statement plant
  • One picture or print (not a changing poster)

Microphones for home office

Model Price Character
Logitech Brio Headset 50-80 € Simple, plug and play
Audio-Technica AT2020 120-180 € USB studio microphone
Shure MV7 280-350 € Professional, podcast-like
Rode NT-USB Plus 200-280 € Very popular for calls
Elgato Wave:3 180-220 € Streamer-focused

Software tips

  • Krisp: AI-based background noise removal (Free + Pro)
  • Zoom Echo Cancellation: activated by default, significantly improved
  • Audacity: for the post-call recording workflow
  • Loopback (Mac) / Voicemeeter (Win): for more complex audio routing

Common errors

  • Eggshell acoustic foam everywhere: looks unprofessional, NRC often bad
  • Microphone too far from mouth: detects room acoustics instead of voice
  • Loud mechanical keyboard: Click noises dominate the audio
  • Calcly white light: appears cold and unsympathetic in the video
  • Mirrors in sight: Reflections are distracting

Budget levels

Minimum (200-400 €)

  • 4 m² acoustic panels: 200-300 €
  • USB microphone: 100 €

Solid (500-1,000 €)

  • 8 m² acoustic panels: 350-500 €
  • Studio USB microphone: €200-300
  • Ring light: 50-100 €
  • Krisp Pro license: 60 €/year

Premium (1,500-3,000 €)

  • 12 m² acoustic panels in a premium look: 800-1,500 €
  • XLR microphone with audio interface: 500-800 €
  • Softbox lighting: 200-400 €
  • Background wall design: 200-400 €

Conclusion

Professional home office acoustics cost €200-1,000 - significantly less than most people think. The main difference between amateur and professional setup is not the microphone, but the room treatment. If you place acoustic panels correctly, you'll sound more professional than ever with a €100 microphoneand with studio equipment in an untreated room.

At ArtHouse you will find suitable acoustic panels and wooden slat panels for home office setups. More about acoustic basics in the acoustic panel guide.
