DIY Acoustic Optimization: Budget Guide Under 200€

06. May 2026 · ArtHouse·1min read

Acoustic optimization doesn't have to be expensive. For under €200 you can create audibly better room acoustics - if you know where the lever is. This budget guide shows the most effective DIY measures per euro invested.

Why most rooms sound bad

Have modern apartments:

  • Hardwood or vinyl floors instead of carpet
  • Large window fronts without tight curtains
  • Smooth wall paint without structuring
  • Open floor plans with high ceilings

Result: Sound is reflected multiple times instead of being absorbed. The ear perceives this as reverb, poor speech intelligibility or an “empty” sound.

The 80/20 rule of room acoustics

20% effort brings 80% improvement. Specifically:

  1. Carpet or carpet runner (50% of the effect)
  2. Heavy curtains (15-20%)
  3. Upholstered furniture (10-15%)
  4. Acoustic panels or pictures with fabric frames (10%)
  5. Plants and bookshelves (5%)

If you only install carpet and curtains, you have already achieved 65-70% of the improvement.

Measure 1: Carpet (50-150 €)

By far the most effective step. Rule of thumb:

  • Living room: at least 200×300 cm - the coffee table and sofa should stand completely on it
  • Bedroom: 200×300 cm under the bed
  • Dining room: 250×350 cm — chairs should remain on the carpet when moved in

Material: wool or dense synthetic. Thin cotton carpets are of little use.

Budget tip

IKEA has solid wool rugs starting at €100. H&M Home and Søstrene Grene under €60 in promotions. Avoid pure polyester shag pile — looks cheap and electrostatic.

Measure 2: Curtains (40-150 €)

Heavy, floor-length curtains 2-3 times the width of the wall (so they can fold). Material:

  • Linen (breathable, lets some light through)
  • Velvet or cord (acoustically best)
  • Blackout fabrics (also practical)

Per window: 2 panels each 140-160 cm wide. IKEA complete sets from €40/window.

Measure 3: Bookcase as an acoustic element (free up to €200)

Books are excellent sound absorbers. A full bookshelf on a main wall immediately noticeably reduces reverberation. Rule of thumb:

  • At least 2 m wide, 1.80 m high
  • Books of different sizes, not all the same size
  • Books extend back to the wall (no gaps)

If you already have books - free. Otherwise used books from the flea market or book flea market.

Measure 4: DIY acoustic pictures (40-100 €)

Fabric-covered wooden frames with acoustic fleece or mineral wool inlay:

  1. Wooden frame 60×80 cm from the hardware store (~15 €)
  2. Insert 5 cm of acoustic mineral wool (~10 €)
  3. Cover with decorative fabric (~10-30 €)
  4. On the wall hlengths like a normal image

Per image: 35-55 €. 4 pictures per living room are enough for a clear effect.

Measure 5: Plants (20-100 €)

Large leafy plants absorb a surprising amount of sound:

  • Fiddleleaf fig (large leaves)
  • Strelitzia
  • Monstera
  • Olive tree

3-5 plants per living room are enough. Plus: better air quality and atmosphere.

Measure 6: Upholstered furniture update (variable)

If you're buying a new sofa anyway - choose:

  • Fabric cover instead of leather (acoustically better)
  • Deeper seat cushions
  • Fabric cushions of various sizes
  • Foam back instead of wood

Measure 7: Acoustic panels (130-300 €)

Only when measures 1-6 have been exhausted - add professional acoustic panels:

  • 4-6 m² padded wall panels in a living room wall
  • Most effective behind the sofa or TV area
  • Select NRC value above 0.6

What you do NOT need

  • Eggshell acoustic foam — looks cheap, often smells chemical, NRC less than 0.5
  • Studio-style acoustic curtains — over-the-top for living spaces
  • Ceiling absorbers in normal rooms - rarely necessary below 3 m ceiling height
  • Bass trap absorber — only relevant for recording studios or home cinemas

Example project: Living room for under €200

20 m² living room, echoes clearly:

  • Wool carpet 200×300 cm: 90 €
  • 2 floor-length curtain sets: €60
  • 2 DIY acoustic pictures 60×80 cm: 50 €
  • Total: €200

Expected effect: 50-70% less reverb, significantly better speech intelligibility.

Example project: Home cinema optimization for under €500

  • Large wool carpet: €150
  • Heavy blackout curtains: €100
  • 4 acoustic pictures: 150 €
  • 2 plants: 50 €
  • Total: 450 €

Conclusion

Effective acoustic optimization does not require 5-figure investments. For €200, most living rooms can achieve significantly better sound. If you want more, add high-quality acoustic panels step by step - but only after the basics.

At ArtHouse you will find professional upholstered wall panels for level 7. Detailed physical basics in the Sound insulation vs sound absorption guide.
